Márquez is a community located 14 Km to the north of Lima´s International Airport “Jorge Chávez". It was formed by an influx of people in 1979 (poor people that did not have housing took over and squatted on state lands). In that same year our church "Luz Divina" was founded in the house of Lucila
Hermenegildo.
The community of Márquez has 18,500 inhabitants of whom 70% are children and young people. The community has basic services, like water, sewage, a health center and a state primary and secondary school. The people of Márquez are poor, many live
in extreme poverty due to the critical
economic situation of the country. Many persons are unemployed or underemployed. Others work informally as sidewalk or door-to-door salespersons or as chatarreros (people that pick up recyclable garbage).
The difficult economic situation causes severe social problems that show up in the increase in delinquency, prostitution and drug addiction. The youth don't see alternatives for their lives. The rupture and the disorganization of the nuclear family is also a consequence of the economic problem. There are many single and abandoned mothers that have to assume the total management and support of their homes. Many children are alone in their houses most of the day because their parents leave for work and don't return until night. Children and old people, many of whom have been abandoned by their family, suffer from a high degree of malnutrition.
